New technology to enhance learning

Students at Harvey Primary School are a little more certain to hit their curriculum targets this year after receiving new iPads and robots purchased from fundraising efforts by the school’s parents and citizens association

This year marks the first time computer coding and digital technology are part of the Statewide school curriculum, and although some technology was supplied by the Department of Education for teaching purposes, this fell short of what the school felt it needed to create effective learning opportunities.

“This year we have to report on digital technology in our students’ school reports,” principal Jason Romeo said.

“Our information and communication technology teacher Jo Townsend made a presentation to the parents and citizens association outlining what we required to enhance student learning, and lucky for us the association agreed.”

The new iPads and Dash and Dot robots will be used by students from Kindergarten to Year 6 for coding practice and assessments, and a new sync-and-charge trolley, also purchased by the association, keeps the technology safe when not in use.

“This is the age of digital technology,” Ms Townsend said.

“Student learning at the school is enhanced when it is supported by technologies such as computers, iPads, robotics and coding.”

Ms Townsend said she found the students had been enthusiastic and cooperative when exploring new avenues to problem solve using the additional technology.

“They get to fully engage with the technology they will find in their future beyond school.”
